Quick answer: every carnival has its own dress language. New Orleans wears purple, green and gold with as much costume as you can carry. Rio and Trinidad wear bought mas costumes plus glitter. Venice wears historic gowns and masks in 8°C damp. Notting Hill wears feathers and glitter with a British chance of rain. In all of them, comfortable shoes decide whether you make it to the end of the parade.
New Orleans Mardi Gras
Colours mean something: purple for justice, green for faith, gold for power. Wearing all three is the entry-level move, and locals go far beyond it.
The escalation runs from beads and a purple shirt, through wigs and sequin jackets, to full handmade costumes on Fat Tuesday itself. Krewe parades in the days before are more relaxed; Mardi Gras day is the full effort.
Practical notes that photos hide: February in New Orleans averages 19°C by day and 9°C at night, it rains often, and you will stand on wet streets for hours. Layer under the costume, and wear shoes you can walk kilometres in.
Rio de Janeiro
Two different events in one week. Blocos are the street parties: shorts, a bikini top or tank, glitter, a light costume element, and shoes you can lose. The Sambadrome is where the parade costumes live, and if you are marching with a school your costume is provided and non-negotiable.
At 33°C with high humidity, everything heavy is a mistake. Feather headpieces are hot; carry rather than wear them between blocks.
Trinidad
Mas band costumes are chosen and paid for months ahead, and they come as a package: bikini base, feathers, headpiece, arm and leg pieces. What you add is your own: comfortable dance boots or trainers, a hydration pack, and anti-chafe balm, because you are moving for two full days in the sun.
J'ouvert on Monday morning is the opposite: old clothes you are prepared to destroy in paint, mud and oil.
Venice
The most formal carnival tradition in the world. Baroque gown, cape, tricorn hat, full or half mask. February in Venice is 8°C, damp and often wet, so historic costume goes over thermal layers and the shoes need to work on wet stone.
If you are not committing to a full costume, a good mask over dark tailoring is the respectable minimum.
Notting Hill
Feathers and glitter on Monday, streetwear on Sunday, and 22°C with a genuine chance of rain across both. Comfortable trainers, a small crossbody bag and a light waterproof are the sensible base under whatever you build on top.
What every carnival demands
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| Shoes you have already walked in | Parades are measured in hours, not songs |
| Anti-chafe balm | Feathers, straps and heat |
| Water, carried | Queues are long and the sun is not kind |
| Small zipped bag | Crowds this size attract pickpockets |
| Sunscreen or a light cover-up | Most carnivals happen in strong sun |
| A layer for the end of the night | Even tropical carnivals cool down at 3am |
One rule about cultural dress
Carnival costume traditions belong to the communities that built them. Buying into a mas band, wearing the colours, and joining a bloco are all invitations. Turning up in an approximation of someone's sacred or cultural dress is not, and several festivals now say so explicitly in their guidelines. When in doubt, buy from the local makers rather than a costume website.
Frequently asked questions
What do I wear to Mardi Gras if I do not own a costume? Purple, green and gold in whatever you already have, plus beads and a decent jacket. You will fit right in.
How much does a Trinidad mas costume cost? Prices vary widely by band and section, and they are typically paid in instalments from months ahead. Book early; the good sections sell out.
Can I wear a mask in New Orleans? Yes, and on Fat Tuesday float riders are required to.
