Men's festival outfits: the formulas that work

Men's festival dressing gets less coverage and is, honestly, an easier problem. Three variables decide almost everything: how hot it is, what the ground is made of, and how cold it gets at night.

Here are the formulas that survive all three.

1. Jorts and a tank (20°C and above, dry)

Denim shorts, a ribbed tank or an open camp shirt over a tee, canvas or retro trainers, a cap. The masc summer default, and the one that handles 34°C without you thinking about it. Add sunglasses that you would not mind losing.

Works at: Primavera Sound, Mad Cool, NOS Alive, Lollapalooza, most city-park festivals in summer.

2. All-black function (any temperature, techno)

Black tee or mesh long sleeve, black cargo trousers, black combat boots, small crossbody, sunglasses. The Berlin uniform: nothing shows dirt, nothing needs thought, everything works for nine hours.

Works at: Awakenings, Time Warp, Movement, Kappa FuturFestival, Dekmantel, any warehouse.

3. Jersey core (14–30°C, dance and hip-hop)

Retro football or racing jersey, nylon shorts, terrace trainers, bucket hat. Cheap, breathable, unmistakably of this decade, and it photographs well in a crowd.

Works at: Parklife, Wireless, Longitude, Defqon.1, most UK and Irish dance festivals.

4. Street heat (city festivals, hip-hop)

Oversized graphic tee or jersey, baggy denim or cargo shorts, statement sneakers, one loud accessory, a chain, a cap, sunglasses. Silhouette does the work here, so get the proportions right and keep the palette tight.

Works at: Rolling Loud, Sole DXB, Splash!, Wireless, Camp Flog Gnaw.

5. Gorpcore (cold, wet, mountain or forest)

Technical shell, grid fleece, utility trousers, trail runners, beanie. Ugly-useful, and now genuinely fashionable, which is convenient, because it is also the only thing that works at a rainy mountain festival.

Works at: Fuji Rock, Green Man, Way Out West, Iceland Airwaves, Roskilde in a bad year.

6. Linen minimal (hot, city or island, older crowd)

Linen camp-collar shirt, tailored shorts, leather sandals or clean loafers, panama hat. The grown-up option for wine-country, jazz and island festivals where everyone else is overheating in denim.

Works at: Montreux Jazz, BottleRock, Ibiza openings, Gnaoua, Wonderfruit.

The three rules underneath all six

Footwear decides the day. Whatever formula you pick, the shoes have to handle the ground for ten hours. Break them in.

Bring the night layer. An overshirt or light jacket that works over every outfit. At most festivals the temperature halves after dark.

Small bag, with a zip. Worn across the body. You cannot carry a weekend in your pockets, and open totes get emptied in crowds.

Every festival guide on this site has a dedicated men's outfits page with ten looks ranked for that specific festival's weather and crowd.
