Quick answer: a rave outfit needs three things: something you can dance in for eight hours, something that survives sweat, and shoes that protect your feet on a sticky floor or a muddy field. Everything else is expression. The two dominant looks are maximal rave wear (mesh, neon, kandi, glitter, platform boots) and all-black techno (black tank, cargos, combat boots, sunglasses). Which one is right depends entirely on the room you are walking into.
The two families of rave dress
Almost every rave outfit sits in one of two traditions, and they read very differently.
Rave wear proper comes from the American EDM scene and the free-party culture before it: neon and UV-reactive fabrics, mesh layers, rhinestone bra tops, holographic finishes, fluffy leg warmers, kandi bracelets traded with strangers. It is deliberately visible under blacklight and deliberately generous. This is what wins at EDC, Beyond Wonderland, Defqon.1 and Creamfields.
Techno black comes from Berlin and Detroit: black on black, utility fabrics, no branding, no shine. Function over flash, because the room is dark, hot, and you will be there until morning. Awakenings, Time Warp, Movement, Kappa FuturFestival, any warehouse party.
Turning up in full kandi at a Berlin warehouse or in all black at EDC will not get you turned away, but you will feel it. Look at recent crowd photos of the specific event before you commit.
What survives eight hours
| Choice | Why it works |
|---|---|
| Mesh or open-knit layers | Air moves through them; they dry between sets |
| High-waisted shorts or cargos | No waistband digging in while you dance |
| Platform boots | Height without a heel that sinks or wobbles |
| Cushioned trainers | The right call for concrete floors and 20.000 steps |
| Small crossbody with a zip | Hands free, and it survives a crowd |
| Filtered earplugs | The cheapest thing that protects the rest of your life |
What does not survive: new shoes, anything dry-clean only, long trailing fabric on a crowded floor, and a bag you would be upset to lose.
Kandi, glitter and the etiquette around them
Kandi bracelets are beaded cuffs made to be traded, usually with the PLUR handshake. Make more than you need, wear them up both arms, and expect to come home with different ones.
Glitter is now regulated at a growing number of events: biodegradable only, and some venues ban loose glitter outright. Face gems last longer through sweat and come off in one piece. Apply on clean, dry skin before sunscreen or after it has fully absorbed.
Building a rave outfit from what you own
- Pick the base. A bodysuit, bralette or plain tank. It carries everything else.
- Add one texture. Mesh, fishnet, sequin or holographic. One is enough.
- Solve the bottom half for movement. Cycling shorts, rave shorts, cargos or a skirt over shorts.
- Choose shoes for the floor, not the photo. Concrete, grass, sand and mud all want different things.
- Add the night layer. Even in summer, 4am is cold, and the queue for the cloakroom is long.
- Accessorise last: gems, chrome, chains, a bum bag, earplugs.
What to wear to a rave as a man
The masc default that works everywhere: a plain or mesh tank, cargo shorts or trousers, chunky trainers or boots, a cap or bandana, and a sling bag. Add a mesh long sleeve or harness if the party is queer or circuit-leaning, where the dress code is more expressive.
Outdoor raves change the maths
At an indoor rave the enemy is heat. At an outdoor rave it is the temperature swing: 28°C at sunset can be 12°C by the time the last set finishes, and rain turns a field into a shoe graveyard. Take one warm layer you can tie around your waist and treat waterproof footwear as part of the outfit rather than an insult to it.
Frequently asked questions
What should I wear to my first rave? Something you already own and feel comfortable dancing in, plus good shoes and earplugs. Buy the statement pieces after you have seen the crowd for yourself.
Are raves a dress-up event? At EDM festivals, yes, and the effort is part of the fun. At techno events, mostly no.
How do I keep glitter off everything? Use gel-based or biodegradable glitter, apply it outside, and accept that some will follow you home.
Can I wear a costume? Yes at fantasy-themed events like Beyond Wonderland and Electric Forest. At a warehouse party you will be the only one.
Find the event you are going to in our festival guides and the page will tell you which of these two worlds it belongs to.
